A conversation with Rubyn Park on the architecture of an exhale
Read time: 3 Mins | Sensory Focus: Visual, Auditory, Olfactory | Mood: Balanced

Rubyn Park is the founder of Mii Studio. She believes that true strength and fitness comes from creating balance in all aspects of movement. For Rubyn, Pilates is more than exercise; it’s a way of showing love to the body we live in every day. Her philosophy is simple: every body deserves to be cared for so that we can continue to enjoy life in healthy, functional ways.
We speak to Rubyn on the mechanics of softness and the architecture of an exhale.
"A sense of ‘wow’ that doesn’t come from excess, but from restraint."

Mii Studio has a very distinct visual language: arches, neutrals, and filtered light. In a suburb designed for function and productivity, how important was it for you to create a visual space that feels "undemanding" on the eye?
The importance of an undemanding visual space comes from feeling how overwhelming day-to-day life can be. Between work, constant stimulation, and the sheer volume of information we’re exposed to, it doesn’t take much to tip into feeling overstimulated.
With Mii Studio, I wanted to create somewhere that felt elevated and beautiful, but also simple and soft. A sense of "wow" that doesn’t come from excess, but from restraint: softness in the mirrors, filtered and backlit light, neutral tones, flowing curtains. The studio is intentionally minimal so your eyes, and your nervous system, can finally rest.

Pilates is a deeply tactile practice. Unlike a mat class, the Reformer offers constant physical feedback, such as the resistance of the springs, the texture of the loops, etc. How does this tactile connection help clients get out of their heads and ground into their bodies?
I’ve always seen the Reformer less as resistance, and more as support. The spring selection should be set to meet you where you are. They hold you, guide you, and respond to you in real time.
That constant physical dialogue helps people soften out of their heads and into their bodies. Instead of forcing movement, clients can listen. The tactile connection becomes grounding; it creates trust, awareness, and a feeling of being safely held while still being challenged.

We believe scent is the quickest way to alter a mood. Do you have a specific olfactory signature for the studio that signals to your regulars that the work day is over and the "self" time has begun?
We don’t have a defined scent just yet. However, our intention and inspiration has always come from Kaukokaipuu by Latibule. It feels perfectly aligned with Mii: uplifting yet dreamy, familiar but quietly unique. Something that doesn’t overpower, but feels calm and comforting.

A studio has a specific rhythm. Beyond the playlist, there is also the sound of the carriage moving and the collective breath. How do you use sound (or silence) to dictate the energy of the room? Do you prefer a hypnotic flow, or something more driving?
There isn’t a single fixed rhythm at Mii, every instructor brings their own style. Generally, I gravitate towards softer, gentler music in the mornings, and something a little more upbeat as the day unfolds.
But beyond the playlist, there’s something incredibly regulating about the collective breath in the room and moments of intentional quiet. Those pauses create space for people to tune inward. The energy we aim for isn’t rushed or performative; it’s steady, immersive, and quietly supportive.

We view movement as a form of nourishment, but we are also interested in how you nourish yourself. After a long day of holding space for others, what is the ritual that resets you?
If I’m being honest, a defined end-of-day ritual has been a work in progress for me this past year. The one thing that’s remained consistent is my nighttime skincare routine. That small, familiar act of care for myself, and a quiet conversation with my partner once we’re in bed. My self nourishment has been less about what I consume, and more about intentionally making time for myself to transition into rest.
