The Volute is a study in quiet balance, born from a desire to ground our daily rituals in history.
The body is designed to be intentionally understated, a gentle tulip flare resting on a slight, elevated foot. This simplicity provides the canvas for the mug’s defining feature: a slow, hand coiled spiral handle.
Drawn from the sprial, one of the oldest and most universal marks made by human hands, the handle invites your fingers to trace a shape that has existed for millennia. It is a meeting of ancient geometry and modern stillness, designed to turn a morning coffee into a tactile meditation.
The Survivor
True craft cannot be rushed, and the kiln is a notoriously unforgiving judge.
Thrown by hand and fired in small batches by Studio Yun in Orewa, the making of a single Volute mug is a labor intensive process that spans weeks.
The coiled handle, while beautiful, is incredibly complex to execute; the tension of the spiral means that clay often cracks as it dries or warps under the intense heat of the kiln.
For every flawless, soft cream Volute that emerges from the final firing, several others are lost to the process. The mug you hold is a survivor, it is the unpredictable nature of earth and fire, and the mastery of slow, deliberate making.
